Frames can make a piece of artwork even more special. I like to work with both milled lumber and pieces collected from nature. Occasionally I collaborate with my wife, who likes to paint simple MDF frames with designs that compliment the artwork.

I like working with cherry and mahogany for my Arts and Crafts frames. The patina darkens with age and gives a very mellow feel to the wood.

Coffee beans and stain in a channel frame make a lovely compliment to this graphite portrait of our Corgis, done by Alison Brush (www.alisonbrush.com) a few years ago.

MDF, dusty and irritating as it is, is my wife's favorite for painting and making unusual frames for photographs, artwork and mirrors.  My wife's pieces are acrylic on MDF.

Posters by Amy Ringholz (amyringholz.com) really come alive with painted frames.

This mirror with the horse frame was a wedding present for a friend who worked with the horses at our ranch for many years.
